Virtual Reality Interactive Learning Environments

Advanced three-dimensional virtual environment technology, similar to that used by the film and computer games industry has been used to generate an interactive learning environment that allow students to design and perform virtual chemical engineering laboratory experiments. Early attempts at ‘virtual’ chemical laboratories have often consisted of little more than online calculators or interactive diagrams and those that have ventured into applying three-dimensional computer graphics based technology have been constrained by lack of realism detail in their graphical interfaces and level of simulation. Recent advances in computer graphics and virtual reality technology now allow developers to rapidly create realistic three-dimensional, virtual environments. The virtual environment described in this paper replicates a ‘real’ industrial petrochemicals plant, allowing undergraduate students to experiment with large-scale equipment they could not normally access. The plant being modelled operates on a three-stage process where a feed flows to a catalytic reactor which in turn passes the mixture of products into two distillation columns for separation. The simulation model developed contains over a billion possible permutations allowing the students unlimited scope for experimentation and configuration. The authors are currently undertaking a series of tests and experiments aimed at understanding the way students learn in this virtual world and how the ‘world’ improves their understanding of the chemical processes at work in this system. This paper will give an overview of the project, its uses, report on the results of the user analysis experimentation and provide some guidelines for future projects of this nature. The authors intend to demonstrate the virtual reality system during their presentation.
